COMING SPRING 2018

#velvetundergroundexperience

The blockbuster multimedia art and music exhibition The Velvet Underground Experience will travel from the Philharmonie de Paris to Skylight Modern, New York City, in April 2018 — the first-ever multimedia exhibition on the music and art of the Velvet Underground to receive official support from the band and its estate.

Spanning the sixties to the present, the Velvet Underground’s career trajectory is one of the most fascinating stories in the history of art, music, and popular culture. Despite its short lifetime, the band is still cited as one of the biggest influences on creative forces not only in music, but also in fashion, cinema, art, and politics, from the likes of David Bowie, Nirvana, R.E.M., and Radiohead to John Waters, Larry Clark, Tim Burton, and Stefan Sagmeister.

Included in the exhibition are works and archival material from:
Antoine d’Agata, John Cale, Jonathan Caouette, Anton Corbijn, Léo Dorfner, Danny Fields, Nat Finkelstein, John Giorno, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Piero Heliczer, João Louro, Gerard Malanga, Willard Maas, Fred W. McDarrah, Jonas Mekas, Marie Menken, Martha Morrison, Billy Name, Nam June Paik, Guy Peellaert, Merrill Reed-Weiner, Adam Ritchie, Barbara Rubin, Alain Séchas, Stephen Shore, Hedi Slimane, Don Snyder, Gus Van Sant, Jean-Luc Verna, and Andy Warhol.

Each section of the experience will feature hundreds of archival images; several underground art films; TV archives; and contributions from contemporary artists, photographers, filmmakers, fashion designers, and others in the Velvet Underground’s orbit who have been inspired by the band’s music and aesthetic.  The Andy Warhol Museum, The Film-Makers’ Cooperative, Anthology Film Archives, and New York University Libraries have also generously loaned materials to the exhibition.

This exhibition retraces the Velvet Underground’s journey from the street to the highest echelons of New York City society, from the pop world to the worlds of art, cinema, and literature. Half a century after the first encounter between the founding members, the Velvets remain fiercely ahead of their time. The Velvet Underground Experience offers a platform for multiple generations of cultural enthusiasts to discover or rediscover the timeliness of the Velvet Underground in its birthplace of New York City.

The 12,000-square-foot exhibition will be chronologically structured into six thematic sections: Welcome to America; Reed & Cale, The Childhood of Art; New York Spirit; Factory Years; Reinventions of the Velvet Underground; and Echoes & Legacy, The exhibition is designed by French industrial designer Matali Crasset.

The Velvet Underground Experience will continue through June 2018, with monthly programming at Skylight Modern as well as at offsite locations. Programming will include talks as well as intimate concerts with filmmakers, artists, musicians, and surviving members of the Velvet Underground.

About the Curators

Organized and curated by Christian Fevret, founder of French rock and roll magazine Les Inrockuptibles, and documentary film director/producer Carole Mirabello, The Velvet Underground Experience.

At 22, Christian Fevret founded the French music and culture magazine Les Inrockuptibles, where he remained editor for 25 years. He also founded the festival of the same name, the literary review L’Immature, and the monthly journal Volume. Fevret is the last journalist to have interviewed the founding members of the Velvet Underground together.

Carole Mirabello graduated from the École Supérieure de Design Industriel, Paris, and began her career as an art director shortly thereafter. In 2005 she founded the audiovisual production company A Better World, through which she has produced several award-winning documentaries, including Bambi (2013), based on the life of pioneering transsexual performer Marie-Pierre Pruvot, which went on to win for Best Documentary/Essay Film at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.

About the Designer

A darling of French industrial design, Matali Crasset has earned critical praise internationally for her unique spaces and products. Ranging from simple, ergonomic kitchen utensils to architecture, her work engages its end users by asking questions about the role design plays in their everyday lives. Named International Interior Designer of the Year at the British Interior Design Awards in 2004, Crasset previously received the Grand Prize for Design from the City of Paris and the Premier Prix de Concours Louis Vuitton.

Her work includes products and interventions for Philippe Starck, Established & Sons, Hermès, Swarovski, Authentics, Domeau & Pérès, Alessi, Meta/Mallet, and Artemide. She has also engaged in architecture in the round, including hotels in Nice and Tunisia. She was raised in a small village in the north of France, where work and life were intimately bound, and her formative experiences clearly inform her view on contemporary design. The uncluttered rhythms of life in the country are reflected in the simple—but often colorful—forms that have earned Crasset a name in the realms of product design, interiors, architecture, and art installations.
